Touching Garden in the Camp

As a keen gardener this struck a chord with me in the Elionas Camp in Athens... one of the refugee families have made a garden outside their hut.... they have sown seeds that have germinated and been able to get some plants from the Sunday Souk (Market) outside the camp.  It has been so telling of mans need to make a place a home and to tune into nature and express and appreciate life on this Earth......

The womenfolk have moved me too.... we women no matter where we are try to make a place a home too and have to hold things together with housekeeping, washing the clothes and cleaning and making meals.  It was just like in my childhood days in our northern community when times were hard after the second world war.  In the camp there would be a knock on the door from one of the kids sent round to share a dish of food that had been made or puddings baked.... this community sharing was a lovely thing to experience.  The Greeks can stand tall in all they are doing to help support the refugees alongside other organisations and volunteers.  There as at least been some dignity restored in these cabins with bathroom facilities.   Each day there are rations of essential foods including fresh fruit.    The teams of volunteers come knocking on doors when there has been a donation of clothes for all to come and select what they want too.  The camp has a momentum of activities from daily schools to doctors clinics......from practical legal advice to language learning for both adults and kids.

The camp community showed solidarity and support when two families were allocated placement in Lativia.... there was a coming together give farewell support and to cheer up fears with music......and lots of hugs too...
Love the office full of kids drawings for the SOS Villages Greece in the camp
