First and foremost I am so proud of Boshra and Mohammed for passing their Dutch test while I was there. But most of all I am so so impressed with Boshra as when we met with a Filipino friend of hers in the market they were chatting in Dutch. I stood back in awe at the observation of Syrian and Filipino communicating in Dutch. I love languages and so it was fascinating to see how heart to heart connections can be made with all languages. Of course, as I have reported before, the children so readily pick up on languages spoken around them and are exposed to - use them in context and simply do not get muddled. The children also need to learn to write in both Arabic script and Roman script so slowly but surely and with fun I am working with Leen on this.
The write, draw and wipe book I got from Waterstones in Uxbridge has been brilliant for help her with numbers connecting to draw shapes and practice words. The key to this is no matter how many mistakes - there are no mistakes! You can wipe away and keep practising and it is so much fun - we loved this. But little sister is best asleep while we do this as the pen could be all over the wall hhhh and not sure if wipes of walls! :-)
Here is a thank you to Kingshill Hillingdon Age UK the outfits I spotted at the local shop round the corner from me look brilliant.... two lovely party dresses worn for EID and their flared skirts and under petticoats they loved for dancing. Got lovely tops too and the cute apron is a real winner with Leen, she loves helping mama with kitchen chores now wearing this.
It has been useful me visiting Belgium. Though I read Dutch my speaking is not so good.. ik spreek niet zo goed. But the Belgium locals are brilliant as they also speak English so this has been helpful to make contacts for Boshra with the locals.
1. We spoke with a lovely secretary for the Music school, Valerie and we found out that Leen can enrol for Dancing school to start in September. Valerie was lovely & told us her daughter dances too. So they can become friends. We had just missed a concert the weekend of my visit!! oh would have been wonderful to have taken the girls to watch. Little Tutus and ballets slippers all across the stage :-)
2. We met with Beatrix, a secretary for the Art School and Boshra can enrol to start in September.
We found out that Boshra needs to register for a refugee arts card so she can get the courses at a reduced rate. Love this... as the locals are really trying to help and give the refugees chances to rebuild their lives and settle into the community. They understand and feel for all that they have been through in the war. The art is therapeutic too - I shared and insight post on my cup of tea share and care blog on the effects I observed in Boshra in this visit with an isolated incident at a building site. Sudden loud noises reawaken memories and fears of airstrikes. Befriending refugees you gain insights like this and news reports of family members still in hot spots. Refugee week starts on the 17th June and you can learn more and how to help rebuild lives. My project Family Link Up is my personal project which enriches my life and is my life. We have fun too... That was the case on the last night of my trip to Belgium, which was EID too. We had good laugh together round at a friends house. Boshra is making lot of friends through the Dutch course and linked up with family from her home city in Syria. This is amazing and the daughter goes to the same school as Leen! She studies music and is learning to play the guitar. So we had music for the evening and fun dressing up too. Leen looks cute in her Syrian dress and was in fits of giggles at the Hawaiian outfit. Love Family Link Up..
